Formula
Mifflin-St Jeor equation (1990), the formula most current nutrition guidelines recommend over the older Harris-Benedict equation:
- Men:
BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5 - Women:
BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
TDEE multiplies BMR by an activity factor: sedentary ×1.2, light ×1.375, moderate ×1.55, active ×1.725, very active ×1.9.
Worked example: a 30-year-old man, 70 kg, 175 cm, sedentary: BMR = 10×70 + 6.25×175 − 5×30 + 5 = 1,648.75; TDEE = 1,648.75 × 1.2 ≈ 1,979 calories/day.
