Formulas

All three use height in inches over 5 feet (60 inches) as the base:

  • Devine (1974): men 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 60in; women 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch
  • Robinson (1983): men 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch; women 49 kg + 1.9 kg per inch
  • Miller (1983): men 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch; women 53.1 kg + 1.41 kg per inch

These formulas give meaningfully different results for the same height — which is exactly why they’re shown together rather than picking one as “correct.”

These formulas estimate a population-average “ideal,” not a personal target. Body composition, frame size, and individual health context matter more than any single number. This tool is informational, not medical advice.

FAQs

Which formula should I use?

None is definitively “more correct” — they were derived from different populations for different original purposes (Devine, for instance, is still widely used in clinical drug-dosing calculations). Seeing the range across all three is more informative than any single number.
